Structural Soils, a member of RSK Group plc, is a 200-strong site investigation contractor with a large fleet of drilling equipment.  It is further supported by a fully accredited UKAS laboratory and together with the Geosciences division of RSK, the company makes RSK Group one of the UK’s largest site investigation service providers.   Over the past year this part of the business has grown by at least 20% and secured some very exciting projects including HS2, A303 Stonehenge Bypass along with being awarded a number of Local Authority Frameworks. 

High profile contracts like these and winning awards such as Ground Investigation Project of the Year at the 2015 Ground Engineering Awards, for the recent site investigation work undertaken at Wylfa on Anglesey, have enabled Structural Soils to make huge developments in their technical, quality and reporting standards, making the company a very exciting proposition for those looking to develop a career within the geological field.

We now have an exciting opportunity for an experienced estimator/bid writer to join the team in Castleford.  The successful candidate will work within the Technical Estimating Team and be responsible for the preparation of fully considered tender submissions. 



Location: Castleford


Reporting to the Technical Director, you will be responsible for the preparation of accurate cost plans and detailed estimates, identifying the true net cost to enable the company to fulfil its business objectives.  More specifically the job role will involve:

  • Receiving, acknowledging and checking tender documentation, raising queries as necessary
  • Evaluating the tender information, preparing the action plan and contributing to bid strategy
  • Evaluating and comparing quotations and compiling accurate costs within the tender
  • Preparing full priced build-ups to assist in supplier / subcontractor selection, ensuring competitiveness
  • Ensuring the safe delivery of the tenders on the relevant submission date
  • Ensuring working relationships with clients and engineering teams are managed professionally
  • Presenting the estimate to the Tender Director, with a fully priced net cost build up. Supported with a full knowledge and understanding of the project in the form of a completed Tender Handover Plan.
  • As appropriate making sure all aspects of the tender documentation are fully understood by the bid team, advising on cost and contract risk.


Desired experience

  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate significant experience working within the UK ground investigation industry either as a contractor or consultant. 
  • The role is likely to evolve and develop to suit the requirements of the team and the strengths of the individual employed. 
  • As an organisation we are able to offer both in-house training and support from experienced colleagues and encouragement to take relevant vocational courses as appropriate.


Person Specification

  • BSc (Hons) first degree in a relevant subject
  • MSc in an industry related subject advantageous
  • Excellent literacy and written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines including time management and scheduling
  • Excellent organisation skills and attention to detail
  • experience of document control
  • excellent level of computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Project


Salary and benefits:

  • £23,000 - £35,000 depending on experience
